Why Sleep Health Matters

Sleep is one of the most powerful — and most overlooked — determinants of long-term health, cognitive performance, and longevity.

Cardiovascular Health

Short sleep (under 6 hours) is associated with elevated risk of hypertension, coronary disease, and stroke in large epidemiologic studies.

Cognitive Performance

Sleep consolidates memory and clears metabolic waste from the brain. Chronic disruption is linked to accelerated cognitive decline.

Metabolic Function

Insufficient or fragmented sleep impairs glucose regulation, increases insulin resistance, and disrupts appetite hormones.

Multidimensional

Duration alone is not enough. The RU-SATED framework evaluates six dimensions for a complete picture of sleep health.

1 in 3
U.S. adults regularly sleep
fewer than 7 hours per night
26M
Americans estimated to have
moderate to severe sleep apnea
10-30%
Adults experience chronic insomnia
at some point in their lifetime

Don't Have Sleep Data Yet?

You can complete this assessment using only self-reported sleep duration. For deeper insight, a wearable device or one of these options can provide the objective metrics that strengthen your RU-SATED profile.

Order Sleep-Relevant Lab Tests

Through ULTA Lab Tests, you can order labs that correlate with sleep health: thyroid panel, inflammation markers, cortisol, and metabolic markers — physician-ordered, no office visit required.

Your Sleep Health Assessment

Choose the assessment mode that best fits your concern, then provide your sleep data. All processing happens privately — no data is stored after your session.

Step 2 — About You & Your Sleep

These three inputs are required. They establish your baseline RU-SATED Duration dimension and tailor the analysis to your age and biological sex.

For each situation below, rate your chance of dozing on a scale of 0 (would never doze) to 3 (high chance of dozing). All 8 must be answered if you start.

Rate each component over the past month. All 7 must be answered if you start.

Show calculation methodology and scoring details

Sleep Health Score (RU-SATED composite, 0–100) implements the multidimensional sleep health framework from Buysse (2014):

Score = (sum of dimension scores / dimensions assessed) × 100

Each of the six dimensions (Regularity, Satisfaction, Alertness, Timing, Efficiency, Duration) is scored independently from 0.0 to 1.0. Dimensions for which no input was provided are excluded from both numerator and denominator — a transparent degradation rather than imputed values.

Dimension scoring rules (each yields 1.0 for "good," 0.5 for "fair," 0 for "poor"):

  • Regularity: bedtime SD <60 min = 1.0; 60–90 min = 0.5; >90 min = 0
  • Satisfaction: self-rated "very good" or "fairly good" = 1.0; "fairly bad" = 0.5; "very bad" = 0. Or PSQI ≤5 = 1.0; 6–10 = 0.5; >10 = 0
  • Alertness: Epworth ≤10 = 1.0; 11–15 = 0.5; >15 = 0
  • Timing: sleep midpoint 2–4 AM = 1.0; 1–5 AM = 0.5; outside that = 0
  • Efficiency: ≥85% = 1.0; 75–84% = 0.5; <75% = 0
  • Duration: age-adjusted per National Sleep Foundation 2015 recommendations (e.g., 7–9 h for adults 26–64; 7–8 h for adults 65+)

STOP-BANG OSA screening (Chung 2016): 8 yes/no items totaling 0–8. Tier classification: 0–2 = Low risk, 3–4 = Intermediate risk, 5–8 = High risk for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea.

Insomnia Severity Index (Morin 2011): 7 items, each scored 0–4, totaling 0–28. Tier classification: 0–7 = No clinically significant insomnia; 8–14 = Subthreshold; 15–21 = Moderate clinical insomnia; 22–28 = Severe clinical insomnia.

Epworth Sleepiness Scale (Johns 1991): 8 situational items, each scored 0–3 (chance of dozing), totaling 0–24. Scores >10 indicate excessive daytime sleepiness; >15 suggests severe sleepiness warranting evaluation.

AI interpretation uses Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.6 model. The model receives only the structured numeric results, age, sex, and any reported comorbidities; it does not have access to your name, email, or any identifying information. The system prompt is constrained to produce educational content with explicit prohibitions against diagnostic, treatment, or curative language.

Disclaimers and Important Information

Educational Use Only

The Sleep Health Analyzer™ provides educational information based on validated clinical frameworks (RU-SATED, STOP-BANG, ISI, Epworth) and AI-generated interpretation. It is not a diagnostic device and does not replace medical evaluation, advice, diagnosis, or treatment by a licensed healthcare provider. It is not a substitute for in-laboratory polysomnography or home sleep apnea testing when clinically indicated.

AI Disclosure

Personalized interpretations are generated using Claude Opus 4.6 (by Anthropic), an artificial intelligence system. AI outputs are based on the data you provide and may contain errors or limitations. Always verify findings with a qualified clinician. Read the full AI Use Disclosure.

Data Privacy & Security

Your inputs are transmitted via HTTPS to our secure backend, processed in memory to compute results, and discarded immediately after the response is returned. We do not store your sleep data, questionnaire answers, comorbidities, or any health information on our servers. If you choose to email yourself a copy of results, your email address is used solely for that one delivery and is not added to any marketing list. Your data is never used to train AI models.

Framework Limitations

The RU-SATED framework provides a multidimensional snapshot; it does not diagnose specific sleep disorders. Self-report instruments (PSQI, ISI, Epworth, STOP-BANG) are screening tools with established sensitivity and specificity but cannot replace clinical evaluation. Consumer wearable data (Oura, WHOOP, Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin) provides useful trend information but has not been validated to the standard of clinical polysomnography. Single-point assessments cannot establish chronic patterns — a 2-week sleep diary or wearable recording is recommended for meaningful evaluation.

Pediatric and Pregnancy Considerations

This tool is designed for adults aged 18 and older. Pediatric sleep assessment requires age-specific normative data and should be performed by a pediatric sleep specialist. Pregnant individuals may experience sleep changes that are physiological rather than pathological; results should be interpreted in consultation with their obstetric care provider.

Accessibility

This tool is built to WCAG 2.2 Level AA standards. Use the floating accessibility icon in the bottom-right corner to enlarge text or enable high contrast mode. If you encounter any accessibility barrier, please contact [email protected].

If You Are in a Medical Emergency

If you are experiencing a medical emergency, including a sleep-related event such as witnessed apnea with cyanosis or sudden severe insomnia accompanied by suicidal ideation, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department.
